History of Alta Badia and Culture of the Ladin Population
Alta Badia is located in the heart of the Dolomites and it is the cradle of the Ladin language and culture. Nowadays the Dolomites represent one of the most important sight of the world thanks to its geological origin which was discovered from Dèodate de Dolomieu at the end of the eighteenth century.
Alta Badia at the beginning was populated by Rhaetin who introduced a great number of activities still present in the today's community. In the following period the invasion of the Romans introduced great changes in the administrative life. In addition, the different ways of speaking of both Rhaetian and Roman communities, encouraged the diffusion of the Ladin language. The Ladin population was born.
In 1027 the administrative life of Alta Badia was reorganized with the establishment of the Episcopal Principality of Bressanone. Just in this period the name "Badia" was coined.
Val Badia slowly expanded but unfortunately the First World War and the numerous conflicts destroyed a large part of the local region. Several soldiers and inhabitants died in this period.
1919 Val Badia became part of Italy. Thanks to Franz Kostner, one of the most important local mountain guides, this beautiful locality of the Dolomites experienced the develop of the modern tourism. Val Badia, with its natural beauties and valleys, had great possibilities to become one of the most visited location of the World.
The Vally, at the beginning reachable only by horse-back coach, is now accessible by transports. The line of communication's diffusion encourages the development of the "Alta Badia Skiing Area".
Despite the numerous tourists who every years choose to spend their summer and winter holidays in Val Badia, local population defend ancient habits and the way of speaking. Ladin language still exists in Val Badia. Only recently, Ladin population was recognized as a third ethnic South Tyrolean minority. Ladin language is used in the schools, at the radio and television and in the public administration.
