Santa Croce Sanctuary in Alta Badia
The hike to the Santa Croce Sanctuary in Alta Badia leads along a wonderful hiking path immersed in the beautiful natural landscape at the bottom of S. Croce Mountain in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park.
The path leads from S. Leonardo in Badia to the place of pilgrimage S. Croce at 2,045 metres above sea level. Here you can ask for plenary indulgence during the holy year. The S. Croce Sanctuary is one of 13 stages in South Tyrol chosen by the diocesan of Bolzano/Bressanone for the jubilee.
From the church of S. Leonardo constructed in beautiful rococo style you can hike towards the farms Pransarores (path no. 7), Rainé and Cianacëi. A hike through the larch forest brings you to the mountain station of the S. Croce cable cars. Those who are less fit can of course ascend by cable car. From here the path leads to a sanctuary and to the hospice along the Crucis path.
The S. Croce Church is highly appreciated by the inhabitants of Val Badia and is a renowned place of pilgrimage during the summer. You can also reach the church on foot from La Villa, S. Cassiano and from La Val. The sanctuary was constructed in 1484 by bishop "Konrad" from Bressanone.
The chapel was extended at the middle of the XVII century and a courtyard was also realised. The sacristan hut and a hospice for pilgrims were added in 1718. In the traditional wooden "Stube" rooms of the ancient hospice you can enjoy your lunch and taste the best "Kaiserschmarren" (sliced pancakes) in the Alps. Enjoy the traditional ambience in this location where the host and his wife personally look after their guests.
